LEARNER Supports

Dyslexia Support

Dyslexia is a neurological and often genetic difference, which effects boys and girls at an equal rate. It is commonly referred to as a language-based learning disability or a specific learning disorder (SLD). Despite average or above average intelligence, conventional teaching methods and sociocultural opportunity, individuals with dyslexia struggle with reading, spelling and writing. These challenges not only have an adverse effect on academic achievement but contribute to feelings of anxiety and depression.

Research shows that an interventionist for a child with dyslexia should have extensive training in a structured literacy approach. The needs of children with dyslexia will vary greatly from learner to learner. Many learners with dyslexia may struggle with:

  • Spelling

  • Reading

  • Processing speeds

  • Written composition

  • Reasoning skills

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a multi-sensory method considered the gold standard in reading instruction for dyslexic and struggling readers alike. Our reading specialist is under review with The Canadian Academy of Therapeutic Tutors, Orton-Gillingham (CATT, OG) and offers structured 1-on-1 OG lessons.

Lessons utilize integrative practices that involve reading, spelling, and writing. Lessons are personalized and diagnostic, where instructional elements focus on the remediation of each students' individual challenges and builds confidence and trust by ensuring the child achieves regular success.

Frequency and duration are essential aspects for successful intervention. OG lessons are an hour in length, occurring a minimum of twice per week. Students are scheduled for a minimum 12-week term, with intervention plans tailored to suit their individual needs and goals.

ADHD Assessment and Intervention

Individuals with ADHD experience challenges with executive functions; the processes that work together to guide thoughts, behaviours and feelings to reach a goal. This often presents as challenges with attention, focus, impulse control and body regulation. These behaviours are not intentional but occur due to neurobiological differences and can look like:

  • Easily forgetful

  • Challenges with physical space

  • Easily distracted

  • Inability to focus

  • Impulsivity

  • Inability to sit still

  • Tuning out or daydreaming
